LOCAL ISSUES
Newcastle
The State Electorate of Newcastle has been poorly represented by the previous and current members.
It is time for a change
I can bring that change
SOS Save Our Scripture SOS Save Our Scripture SOS Save Our Scripture
- Fix the transport in Newcastle with: a single ticket across all forms of transport – buses, trains and ferries, buses feeding the rail system with bus stops at all Railway stations, remove the competition between buses and trains by removing most buses from Hunter Street.
- Work to establish family friendly entertainment facilities in the city center.
- Seek to have more parking available at night in the city.
- Change processes at emergency rooms at hospitals to improve services to the public
- Greater diversity of import/export services from Newcastle harbour, which could include containers, farm products and other bulk products. (we are more than a coal port)
- The completion of connection of National Highway F3 over the Hunter River to the Raymond Terrace bypass to freeway status.
- Constructing the Black Hill to Branxton freeway connection to the New England Highway
- Funding for the completion of inner city bypass highway 123 with a tunnel from the Tickhole Tunnel railway line to the John Hunter Hospital area with a western entry to the hospital. As well as the finishing the Shortland section.
- Expansion of the Newcastle Airport to international status for both passengers and freight. And to connect a rail service to the airport to give a direct service to Sydney, with a view to have a fast train service to Sydney.
- Incentives for greater water harvesting of storm water.
- Proactive programmes to reduce drug and other substance abuse particularly among the youth
- Funding for emergency housing.
- Greater assistance for new immigrants to understand our laws especially in areas of family law.
- Amend the Immigration Act to deal in a balanced way with illegal arrivals.
- Greater development of ship building and repair industry in Newcastle.
- Abandon the Emissions Trading Scheme and re introduce Arbour Day and encourage all citizens to plant at least 2 trees giving nationaly aproxmately 40 million trees planted each year.
- Manage the environment better.
- Work towards getting more freight on the rail system and reduce the increasing use of long haul road freight.
Explanatory notes:
The local members in the Newcastle area up to now have not delivered what could have been and should have done by now. We have a history of missing out, but now it is time to begin receiving for our area’s benefit. Coal is not the only thing that Newcastle can export. With a small investment there could be bulk export/import terminals for containers and farm products from the former BHP site. The airport could be expanded for both freight and passengers to give a alternative to Sydney with many local flow on benefits. We need a perminant passenger terminal at Honeysuckel Drive or we will loose the Ship touring trade from our city.
Road construction. The National Highway 1 needs to be connected from John Renshaw Drive to the Raymond Terrace bypass It should have been completed before 1988 but we still wait. The inner-city Newcastle by pass, though a state road has been over 70 years delayed and I will call on the Federal Government to fund through special grants the construction of this road which will give a western entry into the John Hunter Hospital site.
